In Wamena, Indonesia, tribe leader Eli Mabel safeguards the centuries-old mummy of his ancestor, Agat Mamete Mabel. The Dani people’s tradition of smoke embalming has dwindled over time, but Mr. Mabel strives to preserve their ancient customs.
The mummy is kept in a thatched hut, cared for by a select few villagers who ensure its preservation. Despite challenges, Mr. Mabel hopes to pass on the responsibility to his children and keep their cultural heritage alive. The Dani tribes, secluded in the Baliem Valley, were isolated until the 20th century.
