While he was driving along Via Vignolese he was involved in a road accident with another vehicle, but, instead of stopping, as required by the Highway Code, he walked away and continued driving. The driver of the car, a 26-year-old, was shortly afterwards tracked down by the local police of Modena and was therefore reported and his license was also suspended. In the episode, which occurred around 1.15 am on the night between Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 October, two passengers of the other car involved in the accident were slightly injured.

As reported by Accidents, the man, originally from Colombia and resident in Florence, was behind the wheel of an Opel Vectra, not owned by him, with a 27-year-old female passenger resident outside the province of Modena on board. The car was traveling on via Vignolese, in the direction of the suburbs, when, at the intersection with via La Spezia, for reasons still under investigation, it collided with a Mercedes class A, driven by a 21-year-old resident in the province, who was proceeding in the opposite direction of travel. During the collision the Mercedes also hit a wall. In addition to the 118 ambulance, which accompanied the two passengers of the Mercedes to the Polyclinic (a 21-year-old resident in Modena and a 21-year-old resident in the province), patrols from the Via Galilei Command arrived on site.

Within a few minutes, thanks to the testimonies of those who witnessed the accident, the local police officers found the 26-year-old still inside the car, parked in via Gandini.

The man was accused of criminal violation of article 189 of the Highway Code which, in the event of an accident, prescribes the obligation to stop and provide assistance to any injured people, punishing failure to help. If he were to be found responsible by the judicial authority, he would risk up to three years in prison; his driving license was suspended for a period of up to five years. Furthermore, the motorist’s information will be provided to the 21-year-old, who will be able to evaluate starting a compensation process for the damage sustained to the car.
