Earthquake at the Cesare Beccaria juvenile prison in Milan. 13 prison police officers (12 of whom are still on duty at the facility) were arrested by the police at dawn on Monday 22 April. The handcuffs were imposed following a precautionary custody order in prison issued by the investigating judge at the request of the prosecutors of the V Department of the Prosecutor’s Office. Eight other employees of the same police force – all on duty in via dei Calchi Taeggi at the time of the events – were instead suspended from duty. The fact was made known by the Milan police headquarters through a press release.

The accusations are very serious. The officers must respond, in various capacities, for mistreatment of minors, even through omission, aggravated by impaired defense and abuse of power; complicity in the crime of torture, even by omission, aggravated by the abuse of power of the public official as well as by the circumstance of having committed the act to the detriment of minors; complicity in the crime of injury to minors, even through omission, aggravated by base and futile motives, impaired defense and abuse of power; complicity in the crime of false ideology and finally attempted sexual violence by an officer against a prisoner. The contested crimes, in more detail, would have been committed starting from 2022.
