A HERO IN THE BUSH — The Selfless Act of a Rural Health Worker Saves Lives

A life-saving drama unfolded in the deep rural stretch of the Wa Municipality when a pregnant woman, en route to the Wa Municipal Hospital, went into sudden labour in a remote bushy location — far from any medical facility.

Stranded and distressed, her husband could do nothing but watch in fear.

By sheer providence, Senior Enrolled Nurse Iddris Abdul Latif of the Gudaayiri CHPS compound happened to be passing by. Without hesitation, he stopped, assessed the emergency, and courageously followed the woman into the nearby bush where she had collapsed in active labour.

With no medical tools, no sterile setup, and no supporting team, Nurse Latif relied purely on professional skill, composure, and compassion. Under intense and unsafe conditions, he safely delivered the baby — saving both mother and child.

This remarkable act reflects the true and often unseen sacrifice of rural health workers in Ghana — men and women who continue to risk their lives with limited resources for the sake of humanity.

The Yirimambo Advocacy Group and the wider community are calling on the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, and relevant authorities to recognize and honor Nurse Iddris Abdul Latif for this exceptional display of duty and bravery.

Today, a mother and her newborn are alive — because one nurse refused to walk away.
